Klosterbrauerei Scheyern
Germany · Founded in 1119
Klosterbrauerei Scheyern is one of Bavaria's oldest and most venerable monastic breweries, with roots stretching back to 1119 when Benedictine monks first began brewing at Scheyern Monastery. The monastery itself was founded in 1077, making the brewing tradition here one of the longest unbroken monastic beer-making legacies in Germany. In 1951, the brewery was leased to Augsburg-based Hasen-Bräu, continuing the centuries-old craft under a new operational arrangement while preserving the monastic heritage. Klosterbrauerei Scheyern is known for its traditional Bavarian beer styles, brewed in the spirit of the Reinheitsgebot and deeply rooted in the monastic brewing culture of the region. The brewery has also gained recognition for its innovative approach to sustainability, producing a so-called Solarbier — a beer brewed using solar energy, reflecting a modern commitment to environmental responsibility while honoring centuries of tradition. Situated in the heart of Bavaria, Scheyern Monastery and its brewery remain a notable destination for beer enthusiasts and pilgrims alike, offering a unique blend of history, faith, and craft brewing. The combination of an ancient brewing heritage and forward-thinking sustainability makes Klosterbrauerei Scheyern a distinctive name in German monastic beer culture.
