Hofbräu München
Germany · Founded in 1589
Hofbräu München, officially known as Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München, is one of Bavaria's most celebrated breweries, with a history stretching back to 1589. It was founded as the court brewery of Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria, who was dissatisfied with the quality of beer brewed at his court in Munich and sought to produce a superior product using original recipes passed down through the ducal household. Over four centuries, Hofbräu München grew from an exclusive supplier to the Bavarian nobility into one of the most recognisable beer brands in the world. The brewery's portfolio is deeply rooted in traditional Bavarian brewing styles. As early as the 17th century, Hofbräu expanded its range to include wheat beer and bock beer alongside its core lagers. Today, the brewery is strongly associated with its Märzen and Oktoberfest bier, both of which are staples at Munich's world-famous Oktoberfest — one of only six Munich breweries permitted to pour at the festival. Hofbräu's beers are characterised by clean fermentation, balanced malt character and adherence to centuries-old Bavarian brewing traditions. In 2025, Hofbräu München launched its Hofbräuhaus Helles Lager in the United States in retro-inspired cans, bringing a piece of Munich's brewing heritage to new audiences. The brewery has also engaged in international collaborations, including a partnership with Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. The iconic Hofbräuhaus beer hall in Munich remains one of the most visited beer destinations in the world.
