Gentse Gruut Stadsbrouwerij is a city brewery based in Ghent, Belgium, with a brewing philosophy rooted in medieval tradition. The brewery takes its name from 'gruut' or 'gruyt', the historic herb mixes that were used to flavour and preserve beer long before hops became the standard ingredient in brewing. By reviving this ancient technique, Gruut has carved out a distinctive identity among Belgian craft breweries. Instead of hops, Gruut beers are brewed with a blend of herbs and various malt varieties, resulting in a flavour profile that sets them apart from conventional ales and lagers. The portfolio includes a range of styles, among them the Gruut Blond (5.5% ABV), a soft and light beer brewed without hops using a variety of malts, the Gruut Amber Ale, and a Gruut Non-Alcoholic (0.3% ABV) in an amber style. The use of herb-based brewing gives each beer a unique aromatic character that reflects the brewery's dedication to historical craftsmanship. Located at Rembert Dodoensdreef 1 in Ghent, the brewery welcomes visitors and is a recognised stop on Ghent beer and sightseeing tours. The taproom and guided brewery experience offer guests an insight into both the history of brewing and the distinctive gruut process.
