Foster’s
Australia · Founded in 1886
Foster's is one of the world's most recognisable beer brands, with roots that trace back to Melbourne, Australia in 1886. The brand was founded by American brothers William and Ralph Foster, who relocated from New York City to Melbourne and established what would become an iconic lager. Despite its distinctly Australian image, Foster's story has always carried an international dimension from its very beginnings. Foster's is best known for its flagship Foster's Lager, an easy-drinking pale lager that became a global export success. By 1975, Foster's accounted for 80% of Australian beer imported into Britain, cementing its reputation as the face of Australian beer abroad. In 1981, a licensing deal was signed with UK brewer and pub owner Courage to brew the brand locally in Britain, a practice that continues today. Foster's Premium Ale, an English-style pale ale, rounds out the core portfolio alongside the lager. Over the decades, Foster's grew into part of Foster's Group, a major Australian beverage company headquartered in Melbourne, with brewing operations under Carlton & United Breweries (CUB). The brand has since been licensed and brewed in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, making it one of the most widely distributed Australian beer brands in the world.
