Drentsche Schans

Drentsche Schans is a farmhouse brewery located in Holsloot, Drenthe, run by Gert and Ans ten Hool. Founded in 2002, the brewery is situated on the same grounds as an arable farm, making it one of the rare examples of true grain-to-glass brewing in the Netherlands. The barley used in production is grown on the sandy soils of Drenthe, giving the beers a genuine sense of terroir that is deeply rooted in the local landscape. The brewery's portfolio is built on this agricultural foundation, with beers brewed traditionally and unpasteurised, preserving their natural character. A notable example from the range is the Boeren Blond, a farmhouse blonde ale that embodies the straightforward, honest approach of the brewery. The focus is on quality and authenticity rather than volume, with small-batch production tied directly to the harvest cycles of the farm. Drentsche Schans represents a growing movement of agrarian breweries in the Netherlands, where farming and brewing are inseparable. The combination of homegrown grain, traditional brewing methods and an unpasteurised finish gives these beers a distinctive identity that stands apart from industrial production.
