Brouwerij Liefmans
Belgium · Founded in 1679
Brouwerij Liefmans is one of Belgium's oldest breweries, with roots stretching all the way back to 1679, when the Liefmans family first began brewing in the region. Around 1750, brewer Jacobus Liefmans chose the fertile city of Oudenaarde as the home for the brewery, a location it has retained ever since. After passing through various hands over the centuries, including a period under Brouwerij RIVA from Dentergem, the brewery faced financial difficulties and was acquired on 24 June 2008 by Duvel Moortgat, which took over the activities of the then-bankrupt companies Brouwerij Liefmans n.v. and Liefmans Breweries n.v. Liefmans is rooted in the tradition of mixed fermentation brewing, a craft that places it firmly within the Flemish tradition of oud bruin beers. Oudenaarde has long been associated with this distinctive brown ale style, characterised by a complex interplay of sweet and sour notes resulting from blending and long maturation. The brewery's approach to fermentation and its historic brewing techniques make it a key reference point for anyone exploring traditional Belgian ale styles. Today, Brouwerij Liefmans welcomes visitors to its historic site at Aalststraat 200 in Oudenaarde, where guided brewery tours offer a window into more than three centuries of Belgian brewing heritage. As part of the Duvel Moortgat family, the brewery continues to carry forward its long legacy while reaching a global audience.
