Brouwerij de Smokkelaar

Brouwerij de Smokkelaar is a Dutch craft brewery founded in 2018 and registered in Overdinkel, a small village in the easternmost corner of the Twente region in Overijssel, right on the border with Germany. The brewery draws its name and identity from the rich smuggling history of this border area, once known as the "wild west" of the Netherlands, where locals would cross the frontier with foreign goods. This colourful past serves as the creative backbone behind every beer the brewery produces. True to its smuggling spirit, Brouwerij de Smokkelaar incorporates exotic foreign ingredients into its beers, blending them with local character and craft. The brewery's portfolio spans a variety of styles, including Belgian-inspired ales and seasonal specialities such as a Herfstbok. Each beer name and the story behind it pays tribute to the smuggling lore of the Twente borderlands, making the brand as much about regional heritage as it is about quality brewing. Alongside the brewery, de Smokkelaar operates a proeflokaal (taproom) where visitors can taste the beers fresh from the source. One of their notable offerings is the Queen Bee, a Belgian Tripel that has gathered over 2,000 ratings on Untappd, reflecting a growing following among craft beer enthusiasts in the Netherlands and beyond.
