Brasserie Akerbeltz
France · Founded in 1999
Brasserie Akerbeltz is a craft brewery rooted in the heart of the French Basque Country. Founded in 1999 by François Iraola, a brewer of Basque origin, the brewery has been crafting beer in the Ascain area using traditional brewing methods from the very start. In 2012, the brewery expanded by relocating to a larger facility at Larre Lore in Ascain, allowing François to grow his passion project into a well-established local institution. The portfolio of Brasserie Akerbeltz reflects the character and identity of the Basque region. The range includes a Blanche (Xuria) at 4% ABV, a Red Ale (Ambrée Gorrosta) at 5.5% ABV, a dark Brune (Iluna), and the Megabeltz, a bolder offering that has earned recognition among enthusiasts. The beers are brewed in keeping with traditional methods, resulting in honest, characterful styles that speak to their terroir. Visitors to the brewery can experience the full Akerbeltz story firsthand — tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the beer is made, followed by tastings on site. The brewery has developed a loyal following both locally and among craft beer lovers across Europe, and is frequently praised for its passionate team and welcoming atmosphere.
