About

Poperings Hommelbier is a Belgian Strong Golden Ale from Brouwerij van Eecke in Watou, created in 1981 by brewmaster Karel Leroy. Conceived for Poperinge's triennial Hop Festival, this beer embodies the region's hop-brewing heritage and has become a symbol of the Westhoek's agricultural and brewing traditions. The beer marries four local hop varieties with two malts in a high-fermentation process, bottle-conditioned for complexity. Golden-bronze in colour with a dense white head, it invites with a fragrant nose of green hops, yeast, and delicate fruit—orange and honey notes emerge alongside white bread and grain sweetness. On the palate, malt and hop strike a measured balance: initial sweetness gives way to citrus, spice, and soft fruit, finishing dry and crisp with a gentle bitterness. Medium-bodied and lively on the tongue, the 7.5% ABV warms without overwhelming, leaving a refreshing, lingering hop impression.
