Old Speckled Hen is a classic English ale with roots tracing back to 1979, when it was first brewed by Morland Brewery in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, to mark the 50th anniversary of the local MG car factory. The brewery was acquired by Greene King in 2000, and production moved to their base in Bury St Edmunds, where it continues today. A high proportion of Crystal malt delivers the beer's signature toffee and caramel character. The fermentation yeast contributes distinctive fruity esters with hints of banana and pear, creating a well-rounded profile. The result is a malt-driven ale with caramel warmth balanced by subtle fruit notes and a gentle hop bitterness, finishing clean and refreshing.
