About
Ganko Oyaji is an ambitious barley wine from Baird Beer, the Shizuoka brewery founded in 2000 by Bryan and Sayuri Baird. At 11% alcohol, this is a full-bodied, complex ale built for serious drinkers. The aroma hints at hops beneath layers of sweetness—toffee and plum emerge as the beer warms. On the palate, it unfolds in stages: bready sweetness, fruitcake, and cognac-like warmth, balanced by citrus sharpness reminiscent of marmalade zest. Grapefruit and spicy, floral notes add dimension. This is an after-dinner barley wine with a drier, more attenuated finish than many in the style. A blend of bittering hops—including Magnum and Galena—keeps the richness in check and delivers assertive bitterness. Best served as a restorative or meditation beer.
