Stift Engelszell

Stift Engelszell is a Trappist monastery located in Engelhartszell an der Donau, in Upper Austria. Founded around 1293, it holds the distinction of being the only Trappist monastery in Austria. The brewery made international headlines in May 2012 when it became the eighth certified member of the International Trappist Association — and the first to receive that certification outside of Belgium or the Netherlands. The monastery is situated at Stiftstraße 6, 4090 Engelhartszell, and operates with an annual production of approximately 2,000 hectolitres. The brewery produces authentic Trappist beers, brewed within the walls of the monastery in accordance with the strict standards of the International Trappist Association. Among the beers in its portfolio is Gregorius, a rich quadrupel weighing in at 10.5% ABV, noted for its complex, dark malt character. True to Trappist tradition, the beers are bottle-conditioned and reflect the craftsmanship of monastic brewing. As the sole Austrian representative among the world's Trappist breweries, Stift Engelszell occupies a unique position in the global craft beer landscape. It has been listed alongside celebrated names such as Chimay, Orval, Westmalle, Rochefort, Westvleteren, and La Trappe, cementing its place in the canon of authentic Trappist brewing.
