Kona Brewing Company was founded in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Their dream was to create fresh, locally inspired beer that reflected their love for Hawaii and its pristine natural environment. Starting as a small brewpub, Kona was at the time virtually the only craft brewery in Hawaii, making it a true pioneer of the island's beer scene. Since October 1, 2010, the company has been part of Craft Brew Alliance, and has since grown into a nationally recognized beer brand across the United States. In 2020, Kona Brewing Hawaii was re-established as an independent brewery, separate from the broader national operations. Kona Brewing is best known for its approachable, island-inspired lineup of beers that blend classic craft styles with the laid-back spirit of Hawaii. The brewery quickly introduced flagship beers such as Big Wave Golden Ale and Fire Rock, which became signatures of the brand.
