Duvel Moortgat is a Flemish family-controlled brewery with roots stretching back to 1871, when Jan-Leonard Moortgat and Maria de Bock founded the brewery in Breendonk, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. Already well established in Belgian brewing before the First World War, the brewery experienced a defining moment in 1923 when a local shoemaker tasted their new beer and declared it "a real devil" — and so the name Duvel was born. That iconic golden ale would go on to make the brewery world-famous. Duvel itself is a Belgian strong golden ale, celebrated for its complex fermentation process, refined bitterness, and deceptively high alcohol content. The beer is brewed using a distinctive second fermentation process, contributing to its fine carbonation and characteristic fluffy white head. Beyond their flagship, Duvel Moortgat has grown into an independent family of authentic craft breweries, with 13 breweries and more than 20 iconic brands under its umbrella, including Vedett and acquired names such as Achouffe (2006) and Liefmans (2008). With a global reputation built over 150 years, Duvel remains one of the most recognised Belgian specialty beers in the world. The Duvel Moortgat group expanded its international footprint in 2003 with the establishment of Duvel Moortgat USA, following the acquisition of Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York.
