Brouwerij Het Sas is one of Belgium's oldest breweries, with roots stretching back to 1572, when it was founded at the sluice (sas) in Boezinge, a village in the West Flemish Westhoek region. The brewery's long history was dramatically interrupted during the First World War, when French troops burned it to the ground in 1915. It was rebuilt and reopened in the centre of Boezinge in 1924, continuing a brewing tradition that spans nearly five centuries. Over the decades, Brouwerij Het Sas became known for straightforward Belgian lager brewing, with Sas Pils among its recognised beers. The brewery operated in the broader West Flemish brewing landscape alongside neighbours such as Brouwerij Van Eecke in nearby Watou, the maker of the celebrated Poperings Hommelbier, a region historically rich in hop cultivation. In 2016, Brouwerij Het Sas and Brouwerij Van Eecke merged to form Leroy Breweries, consolidating two historic West Flemish brewing houses under one roof. Together they represent a combined heritage that makes Leroy Breweries the oldest brewery in West Flanders. It is worth noting that a separate, unrelated brewery also called Het Sas existed in Boortmeerbeek in the province of Flemish Brabant, but that establishment has since ceased operations.
