St. Bernardus Prior 8 is a traditional abbey beer brewed in the classic dubbel style. The recipe originates from the brewery's licensed brewing period (1946–1992) under Sint-Sixtus. After the breweries separated in 1992, St. Bernardus established its own identity, moving beyond the Trappist designation. Prior 8 presents as a dark, inviting dubbel with rich caramel and chocolate depth, complemented by dried fruit and spice undertones. The nose is complex and layered, revealing caramel, dark chocolate and orange notes. On the palate, malt richness dominates with a gentle spiced finish and crisp carbonation that keeps the beer balanced and approachable despite its 8% ABV. The beer has earned international recognition, winning Gold as the World's Best Dark Belgian Style Dubbel at the World Beer Awards, cementing its status as a benchmark example of the style.
