The Vatgerijpte Abt-Generaal 2020 from Berne Abdijbier is a special edition of this classic Quadrupel. The base recipe matures for a full year in oak casks previously used for Barbados rum and Islay Single Malt whisky, adding considerable depth to the beer. The nose reveals spicy notes from Belgian yeast alongside cappuccino aromas. On the palate, the beer is overwhelmingly sweet with prominent caramel, candi sugar and bread tones. This is a dark and full-bodied beer that reveals its complete character only after wood maturation. Berne Abdijbier from Heeswijk-Dinther has demonstrated with these barrel-aged special editions that they command the craft of oak aging.
