Harviestoun's Ola Dubh 40 Year Special Reserve is an Imperial Porter aged in oak casks formerly used to mature 40-year-old Scotch whisky. This ambitious beer marries the full flavour profile of a classical Imperial Porter with the complexity that decades of wood maturation bring. The nose reveals dark chocolate, coffee and oak, complemented by subtle notes of over-ripe fruit and polished leather. On the palate, roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa take the lead, while wood aging contributes layers of vanilla and oak. The finish brings smoke, coffee and a warming alcoholic presence. At 10.5% ABV and with a full, heavy body, this is a contemplative beer deserving time and attention.
