Brettûne No. 21 Gerookte Citroen from Grutte Pier Brouwerij is a wild-fermented take on their classic Tripel. The beer spent eighteen months in French oak barrels from January 2019 to June 2020, where it underwent secondary fermentation with Brettanomyces yeast. This creates a complex beer with fruity character, subtle tartness, and delicate vanilla notes from the wood. The name reflects an experimental twist: smoked lemons, gently prepared over beech wood. These bring citrus aromatics that interact with the tannins and woody character from barrel aging. The result is drier and fruitier than a standard Tripel, with pleasant tartness, an astringent edge, and a subtle smoky undertone that ties the whole expression together.
