Grimbergen

Grimbergen is a Belgian abbey beer brand with roots stretching back to 1128, when the Premonstratensian abbey in Grimbergen was founded. The abbey was destroyed by fire multiple times — in 1142, 1566, and 1798 — yet always rebuilt, earning the brand its enduring nickname 'The Phoenix Beer.' This remarkable resilience became the symbol of the Grimbergen identity and continues to define the brand today. For much of its modern history, Grimbergen beers have been commercially brewed by Alken-Maes, which has been part of Heineken since 2008. The portfolio includes a range of premium Belgian-style abbey beers, celebrated for their refined character and brewing heritage. In 2021, brewing returned to the original abbey grounds for the first time in over 200 years, through a joint venture with Carlsberg. The new Grimbergen Abbey Brewery functions as an innovation hub, producing small-batch craft beers including the Ignis Quadruple, Astrum Pale Ale, and Magnum Opus Brut. The Grimbergen Abbey Brewery has since expanded its immersive visitor experience, bringing nearly 900 years of brewing history to life on-site. The combination of a global commercial brand and a living abbey brewery makes Grimbergen a unique presence in the Belgian beer landscape.
