Dortmunder Borussia
Germany · Founded in 1870
Dortmunder Borussia is a historic German brewery with roots in the city of Dortmund, one of Germany's most celebrated brewing cities. Founded in 1870, the brewery was originally known as the Hansa brewery and operated under the Dortmunder Borussia name during its early years. Dortmund has long been one of Europe's great brewing centres, historically producing more beer than any other German city, and Borussia was part of that proud tradition. The brewery is associated with the Dortmunder style, a pale lager originating in Dortmund that is characterised by a firm malt body, moderate bitterness, and a clean, balanced finish. This style, sometimes called 'Dortmunder Export', became one of Germany's signature lager traditions alongside Pilsner and Munich Helles. The site that once housed Dortmunder Borussia later became the home of Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB), which is part of the Hansa brewing group, continuing the legacy of large-scale lager brewing in the region.
