Orval
Orval is a distinctive Belgian Trappist ale brewed by Brasserie d'Orval since 1931 within the walls of Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval in the Gaume region. This high-fermentation beer derives its character primarily from hops and yeast rather than malt. The flavour balances dry, fruity notes with a pronounced hop bitterness.
The brewery employs a straightforward malt bill of pale malt with a touch of caramel malt, supplemented with sugar. What sets Orval apart is its use of hop flowers for dry hopping and the addition of Brettanomyces during maturation, which introduces complex fruit esters and a characteristically dry finish.
This is a full-bodied, intricate ale with restrained carbonation and an assertive hop-bitter aftertaste. Orval continuously adapts to seasonal variations and evolves in the bottle, making it a truly distinctive Trappist offering.
