Brouwerij Emelisse in Goes created an unlikely combination with the Black IPA: a dark India Pale Ale that fully expresses both characters. The beer is made by adding dark malt at a specific point in the brewing process, resulting in a pitch-black colour with a thin, off-white head.

The nose presents a classic IPA blend of citrus, pine needles and ripe summer fruits, with a background of roasted malt. On the palate, coffee and bitterness dominate, complemented by caramel and liquorice notes as the beer warms. The hop bitterness is present but not overwhelming, keeping this 8% ABV beer well-balanced.

This is a hoppy dark ale where the hop character clearly takes the lead over the dark malt character.
