Traquair House Brewery

Traquair 160/- Shilling Ale

Traquair's 160/- Shilling Ale is a traditional Scottish ale at 9.5% ABV, brewed at one of Scotland's oldest inhabited houses. The brewery, documented since 1694, resumed modern production in the 1960s and remains unique for fermenting in unlined oak vessels—a practice now rare among British breweries. The shilling system of naming was once distinctive to Scottish brewing, denoting the ale's strength and character.

Made from pale ale malt, crystal malt and roasted barley using 18th-century methods, this ale offers dark stone fruit aromas of plum and currant alongside toffee and spice. The palate is rich and warming, with earthy undertones and a dry finish. It drinks as a contemplative winter ale, rewarding patience and worthy of cellaring.
