Gruut Amber
Gruut Amber from Gentse Stadsbrouwerij revives medieval brewing traditions by replacing hop bitterness with a carefully selected blend of herbs and spices. Four malt varieties form the base, combined with lavender, rosehip, elderberry and spruce branch to create balance and complexity. The result is a dark amber ale with a distinctive peppery dryness.
On the palate, caramel malt and dark fruit notes emerge alongside herbal spice. The medium body and crisp carbonation lead to a long, dry finish where the herbal character lingers. This is thoughtful brewing that honours historical methods without relying on period nostalgia.
